These are pictures of longing and distance, and an attempt to get closer to a place that is no longer my home. I left my hometown barely a teenager, and I took with me many memories. I didn't go back for years, and the longer time passed, the more these memories resembled dreams, as if my childhood was somehow imagined.
When I did finally go back, I felt oddly foreign, yet I knew that I belonged there. This tension was the impetus to revisit the places I remembered as a kid. I roamed at will with no time constraints, only my curiosity to guide me, and at times, overwhelm me. What began as an impulse to shoot what intrigued me became a desire to get at the essence of why this place felt so special to me.
These pictures were taken over two visits to Lima, Perú in 2009 and 2010.
